Silent Film Romantic Classic

The Sheik

Starring Rudolph Valentino

The Sheik is a classic silent romantic drama film starring Rudolph Valentino and Agnes Ayres, with Adolphe Menjou in a supporting role. Produced by Famous Players–Lasky and directed by George Melford, this 1921 film is based on the bestselling 1919 romance novel of the same name by Edith Maude Hull and was adapted for the screen by Monte M. Katterjohn. In the story, headstrong Lady Diana Mayo (played by Agnes Ayres) refuses a marriage proposal and embarks on a month-long desert trip. There, she encounters Sheik Ahmed Ben Hassan (Rudolph Valentino), leading to a captivating tale of romance and adventure. The Sheik was a box-office hit and significantly contributed to Valentino’s rise to stardom.  Valentino's charisma and sex appeal are still strongly evident in this film, today, 103 years later.

Experience The Sheik as audiences of 100 years ago did this October, accompanied live in the beautiful Phoenix Orpheum Theatre by renowned organist, Ron Rhode.
